Evacuation

• Stay calm and stop whatever you’re doing, safely
• Secure all hazardous materials or equipment if possible
• Close all doors and windows if possible
• Don’t go back for your personal belongings
• Evacuate the building by the nearest exit
• Don’t use elevators and avoid going through tunnels
• On your way out, alert others occupants nearby
• Head to the meeting point outside the building and follow the instructions of emergency services
• Inform emergency personnal if you have observed a person requiring assistance(limited moblity, injured, etc.)
• Don’t go back inside the building until you get the green light from the authorities

Evacuation is mandatory. You must leave the building.

Anyone who is unable to go up or down stairs by themselves or who could slow others down during an evacuation is considered to have limited mobility, even if that limitation is temporary.

During an evacuation, people with limited mobility are assisted by their designated attendants. People with limited mobility are responsible for knowing who is designated to help them in case of an evacuation.

• If you’re a student, ask a teacher or a faculty staff member
• If you’re an employee, your immediate supervisor will assign attendants
• If you live in residence, ask a staff member

In case of evacuation

• Don’t take elevators and avoid going through tunnels
• Leave the building, alone or with the help of an attendant
• Notify Security that you are out of the building by informing a security guard or calling 418 656-5555

If you can’t find an attendant and you can’t get out on your own, go to the landing of the nearest emergency stairwell, call Security (ext. 555, 418 656-5555, red phone), and wait for an emergency attendant to come and help you. Emergency stairwells are safe because they have fire doors that keep smoke and flames from getting in.

During an evacuation, you must exit the building and follow the instructions of the people handling the evacuation. You will be directed to the meeting point for your building. You need to go to the meeting point and not stay near the building, for your own safety and to make sure you don’t get in the way of emergency services. Plus, the meeting point is where you’ll receive further instructions (building cleared for re-entry, activities suspended, etc.).

There are evacuation drills in every building at least once a year. During those drills, you must evacuate and follow the instructions of the people handling the evacuation.
